In Taiwan, driving licences are issued by the Motor Vehicles Offices (監理所／監理站) of the Highway Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications. You can qualify for the tests in one of two ways:

• Through a government-licensed driving school such as KL Driving School. You complete a fixed course (35 days for a car), then examiners from the Motor Vehicles Office come to the school and hold the practical test on the school's own course and in the school's cars. The written test is taken on a computer.
• Self-study: apply for a learner's permit (學習駕照) at the Motor Vehicles Office, practise for at least three months with a licensed driver, then book the written, closed-course and road tests at the Office yourself.

• Since May 2017 every car-licence candidate in Taiwan must pass an on-road test in addition to the written and closed-course tests. Our training routes are the same routes used for the official road test.
• Most candidates choose a driving school: the course, the paperwork, the health check and the test are all arranged for you, and you take the test on the course you trained on.

• Enrol — bring your documents and pay the course fee (see Enrollment & Documents). Car courses start on fixed dates (a new term roughly every two weeks); motorcycle and scooter courses start every Friday.
• Health check — a simple physical examination (eyesight, colour vision, hearing, limbs) at a designated clinic or hospital, NT$250. The completed form must be handed in before the course starts.
• Classroom lessons — traffic rules, driving ethics, basic mechanics and first aid.
• Driving lessons — one instructor, one student. Closed-course manoeuvres (parking, S-curve, hill start, railway crossing, signals) followed by on-road practice on the official test routes.
• Computerised written test — 40 multiple-choice and true/false questions; the official test is offered in Chinese, English and several other languages. Free official mock tests are available online (see Motor Vehicles Office).
• Practical test at our training ground — closed-course test followed by the road test with a Motor Vehicles Office examiner.
• Licence issued — the school handles the application; you receive your licence card afterwards.

If you prefer not to attend a school you must first obtain a learner's permit, hold it for at least three months, and then apply for the tests at the Motor Vehicles Office. You will need your own insured vehicle and a supervising licensed driver for practice, and you must find a suitable place to practise closed-course manoeuvres. Because of this, and because the road test is now compulsory, the driving-school route is usually faster and less stressful. We are not able to rent our course to non-students.

Taiwan has reciprocal licence-exchange arrangements with many countries and states. If your licence was issued by a place that has such an arrangement with Taiwan and is still valid, you may be able to exchange it for a Taiwanese licence at the Motor Vehicles Office without taking the tests (a health check and, in some cases, a written test may still be required). If your licence is not eligible for exchange, you must take the Taiwanese tests — our courses will prepare you for them.

• Eligibility depends on the issuing country / state and changes from time to time. Please check the current list on the MVDIS website or ask the Motor Vehicles Office before you decide.
• A valid Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) is required for both exchange and testing.
